Sekisui House welcomes Planning and Environment Court approval

Sekisui House has welcomed the judgement issued by the Planning and Environment Court to uphold the approval of the Yaroomba Beach development, originally approved by Sunshine Coast Council on 29 June 2018.

Yaroomba Beach Project Director Evan Aldridge said the court’s decision justified Council’s rigorous assessment and approval of the original application, in accordance with its Planning Scheme, and recognised the strategic importance of the project and the community benefits it provided to the Sunshine Coast.

“The Sunshine Coast can now look forward to the development of a world-class tourist destination and a residential coastal village in an exceptional beachside location,” Mr Aldridge said.



“Sekisui House thanks local residents, local businesses, industry and commerce associations, and State and Federal Government agencies who have supported the Yaroomba Beach project over the past five years.

“This will truly represent a landmark development in Australia, delivering a 5 star The Westin Coolum Resort and Spa to showcase the best of the Sunshine Coast. It will drive new tourism to the coast including conferences and events not currently catered for. This will be a tremendous boost for the Sunshine Coast economy. The Westin will be the first 5 Star hotel developed on the Coast in over 30 years.

“The court has found this development will deliver both economic and community benefits. One of those benefits will be hundreds of jobs available for both construction and ongoing operation of the first stage.

“The first stage of development will deliver the 5 Star hotel, serviced apartments and all the public elements of a new coastal village – the shops, cafes, surf lifesaving facilities, Coastal Discovery Centre and parklands. This will be a world class development creating a beautifully landscaped coastal village on the last major beachfront site on the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

Mr Aldridge said the sales and construction program would be developed once the conditions of approval were finalised by the court.



“This is a great milestone and despite the change in the economic environment we are committed to try to get the project started as soon as possible.

“The two year delay caused by the appeal, which has been found by the court to be unjustified, has been extremely expensive for all parties involved.

It has delayed the jobs, economic benefits, and community facilities this world class project will provide for the region.

“Yaroomba Beach will be a catalyst project for the Sunshine Coast as it recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic. It will provide significant benefits for the construction and retail sectors and provide a much needed boost for the local tourism industry moving forward.”
